Chapter 22

January 13th

Eva’s private jet hummed as it sliced through the night sky. Ying had drifted away in one of the reclining seats and was mumbling in her sleep, while Eva swiped through documents on a tablet. She held a glass of wine in one hand, but Albert was fairly sure she hadn’t taken a single sip. From her swept-back hair to her indifferent half-lean, everything about her was…

… elegant, Albert thought.

And isolated. It wasn’t the sort of isolation that was wearing at her, at least as far as he could tell. It had become a part of her, something she had been shaped by. Being a part of her mother’s organization had taught Eva to function with purpose, even when others might be relaxing. The wine was an affectation–a gesture she copied, but with none of the sentiment behind it.

He wondered what it must have been like, trying to hide her changing loyalties.

The sound of a cleared throat caught his attention, and he jumped, looking over to see Salazar watching him with a glint in his eye. Albert flushed and sank into his chair. Salazar could be a lot of fun while hustling them out of a casino, but Albert was in no mood for being teased about his interest in Eva.

Right now, the other man took pity on Albert… in a manner of speaking.

“So. You wanna explain why you ran off to Cambridge and we didn’t hear from you?” He looked Albert up and down critically, as if every detail of Albert’s appearance somehow compounded the disappointment.

“To put it simply…The Tree of Knowledge.” Albert looked over at him.

“You’re going to have to be more specific than that.”

“You can’t figure it out?”

“Well, seems to me that Angus came up with it and taught us a few tricks, and then that snake Culebra took it and decided to take over the world.” Salazar settled into his chair with a faint smile. “So, no. That’s not enough of a clue.”

“Fair enough. At first, I went to Cambridge because I needed to get away from Cristina. Even though her real enemy, Turner, was gone, I worried she would come for me if she thought I was a threat. Or that she’d come for Ying, too, if I was in the U.S. I also needed to crack the code to Turner’s book, and what better place to do research?”

Salazar nodded his agreement.

“While I couldn’t crack the code in Cambridge, I found the real reason I needed to stay.”

Salazar scratched at his cheek and considered. “You’re talking in riddles again, bro.”

Albert sighed. Out of the corner of his vision, he thought he saw Eva look up, but when he raised his eyes, she was still looking at her tablet.

“When we scattered,” Albert said finally, “Cristina and Moloch didn’t follow us. They knew they outmatched us. They weren’t going to risk dead bodies turning up over a bunch of people who couldn’t do anything to derail her.”

Salazar made a small, contemptuous noise.

“She was right–as were we–that we didn’t have enough power to stop her.
